The Mary Wheeler Art Competition

 

This is our annual art competition for people with a learning disability, now in its 16th year. We started it in 2003 to commemorate the life and work of our one-time President and Chairwoman Mary Wheeler MBE who founded Mid-Sussex Mencap in the late 1950s.

 

There are cash prizes, shields and certificates for the winners. There is also the Mary Wheeler Art Award trophy to be held for a year by the person who submits the most outstanding work of art in the Competition.

 

The three categories for 2019 were:-

 

1  'Holidays' - a painting or collage in any medium

 

2  'A Portrait' -  a painting in any medium,

 

3  'Seasons' - a painting or collage in any medium.

 

Entries had to be A4 (preferably) or A3 size, securely mounted on card. Each entry must have had a label on the back showing the name, age, address and phone number of the entrant and their centre or school if they attend one and the category for which the artwork is being entered.

 

The closing date for the 2019 competition was Friday 27th September 2019 by which date entries should have been taken or posted to:

The prize-giving ceremony was held in The Studio at Clair Hall in Haywards Heath on Thursday 7th November 2019 and light refreshments were available. The room was booked to 2.00 pm if people wanted to bring packed lunches.

 

Mid-Sussex MENCAP has funds available for Day Centres, Schools and other Centres for materials and art tuition to support our competition.
