Mid Sussex MENCAP has been running an annual photographic competition since 1983.  It is open to anyone with a learning disability living in East or West Sussex.  In 1996 we added a video film-making competition which encompasses all types of film from documentaries to animation to drama.

The competitions attract an annual entry of about 1000 photos plus 10 to 20 films from about 250 people in all.  Parents and staff have found that photography can be used to improve a variety of skills and gives great satisfaction from successful results.  Making a Video provides an opportunity for teamwork and it is not difficult to find a role for everyone interested.

The results of all these efforts are judged by different experts each year.  All the photos that have been entered are displayed at our annual prize-giving ceremony where up to 30 awards are presented.  Clips from all the films are also shown.

2019 was the 36th year that we have run the competition and we had just over 700 photos and 10 video films entered.The prize giving ceremony for the 2019 Competition was held in June at our new venue, Clair Hall in Haywards Heath. Thanks to all who came along to support our competition and to look at all the photos entered and some of the films. A big special thank you must go to Rosie and Chris for organising the Competition yet again and to Linda for looking after the refreshmsnts.

The photo categories for 2020 were announced as 'General', 'Portrait', and 'Down on the farm'. Because of the Coronavirus outbreak, the 2020 Competition will not now take place. Categories for the 2021 competition will be the same as the 2020 categories would have been (as above) so any photos taken for 2020 can be used in 2021. Details about entering in 2021 will be sent out by Rosie and Chris early in 2021. The 2020 prize-giving ceremony has been cancelled and will not take place at Clair Hall in Haywards Heath on June 18th 2020.
